Red-bellied Woodpecker Drumming on a Tree

Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)
Walnut Woods State Park, Iowa – March 27th,2016
Canon T3i and Tamron 150-600mm

These beautiful woodpeckers can be found in Iowa year-round. In the winter they can often be found at bird feeders tussling with Starlings for the suet. They are often confused with Red-headed Woodpeckers because of their bright red caps. Spend some time in the woods and they may just become your favorite bird to watch.
