One of our favorite types of birds to photograph is owls. They come in many different species and looks. Some can be found in Iowa year-round and others only for a season. The Northern Saw-whet Owl is only found in Iowa during the winter months and can be hard to find because it is roughly the size of a pop can.

There is a park in western Iowa that they can regularly be spotted in but it is about a 2-1/2 hour drive from where I live. We made the drive 3 times and spotted the owls twice before we found them in a spot where they could be photographed.

Now the hunt is on to find one a little closer to home.
